“A fallen woman on the run develops a new life with the aid of a troubled photographer in "The
Photograph," the fourth feature from Indonesian helmer Nan Achnas, whose keen eye and quality
lensing provide a visually luxuriant film experience.”–Russel Edward, Variety
The beautiful, spirited Sita works as chanteuse and
prostitute in a local brothel while sending money to her
daughter and ailing grandmother in another town. Always
short of funds and menaced by her pimp, she convinces
a reluctant portrait photographer – the solitary Mr. Johan,
desperate to fulfill a vow by finding an apprentice before
he dies - to rent her a room. The budding bond between
them, each seeking a reunion with their loved ones in this
life or the next, forms the basis of Nan Triveni Achnas’
touching human drama, infused with gentle humorand rich
with the palpable texture of daily life.
