“One does not undertake a story about a Medal of Honor recipient without a tremendous sense of responsibility to the
subject. I was inspired to produce this film by the many Veterans involved in the campaign, because they are heroes in
their own right. I couldn’t understand why there was a controversy, so I decided to document the story regardless of the
outcome. The struggle against bureaucracy in this story seemed universal to me; whether a community wants to honor a
Librarian, a Fireman, or a Fighter Pilot, the public should have a voice in a decision about a public
commemoration.” - Kevin Gonzalez
Pappy Boyington Field documents the grassroots effort to honor a WWII Hero in Coeur d’Alene, the town of
his birth. Veterans and community members battled against bureaucracy for years to add a commemorative name to their
local airport in Idaho and the campaign was not easily won. Boyinton’s natural abilities distinguished him in the
cockpit – but his hard-living, hard-fighting lifestyle created a controversy to this day.
The film showcases many of the local Veterans involved in the campaign, and weaves their personal stories into the
campaign. Personal insights into Pappy Boyington’s life are provided by his son Greg Boyington Jr.; and also by
Robert Conrad, the actor who portrayed Pappy in the popular television series “Baa Baa Black Sheep.”
