Direct from the public World Premiere screening at the Montreal World Film Festival, we are delighted to bring Devaki to Boise before it travels the global film festival circuit.
Based on a true story, this beautiful film tells the heart-wrenching tale of Devaki, a rural girl, who is forced into a marriage with a 70-year-old
man. On the night of their wedding she is raped by the impotent old man's brother, another manifestation of the old practice of establishing male
dominance.
In protest against this feudal practice, Nandini, an urban girl who has come to work in the village as an NGO activist, quits her job and returns to the
city.
But she soon discovers that urban life isn't much different; one night over dinner her own estranged father proposes that she sleep with one of his
important business clients.
Devaki, meanwhile, enters into a relationship with a lower caste young man. For the first time in her life she feels loved. Has she finally become
something more than a commodity?
