The Butterfly Lovers

The ancient legend of Leon and Jo, the butterfly lovers, is as widely known in China as Romeo and Juliet is here.

This is a beautifully animated retelling of the classic tale set in feudal China hundreds of years ago. At that time, the idea that young people could choose whom they love was considered deviant, and was contrary to the norms of the society (which forbid girls from going to school and expected them to quietly accept arranged marriages). The Butterfly Lovers

But Jo is smart and audacious. She talks her father into letting her dress up as a boy to get an education, however she is soon fated to meet Leon – her classmate and soulmate. When Leon learns Jo's true identity, he is overjoyed. Unfortunately, her parents have other plans for her – plans that include betrothal to an ugly, wart-nosed man. As the wedding day approaches, Leon is devastated, but the bold Jo determines to marry him – no matter what new form their love may take.

This wonderful, unforgettable film received a nomination for the Best Animated Film at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Festival. It played at the TriBeCa film festival in New York, and toured Festivals around the world.
