The Blue Butterfly

Inspired by a true story, The Blue Butterfly is the incredible tale of Pete Carlton; an ailing, but precocious ten year-old with a passion for entomology, and the courage to attempt the impossible.

Although he spends much of his time in a wheelchair, Pete dreams of catching the legendary Blue Morpho butterfly - a magnificent creature found only in the tropical rain forests of Central and South America. Pete's single mother, Teresa takes him to meet his hero, renowned entomologist Alan Osborn (William Hurt) and convinces Osborn to guide them to the Costa Rican jungle to find a Morpho before the season ends.

But monsoon rains, thick mud, searing humidity, leech-filled swamps and their dwindling confidence push them near their breaking point, and the situation becomes explosive. With the butterfly season drawing to a close, only one chance remains. Pete and Alan set off together and their single-minded passion to catch the Morpho becomes a life and death struggle against the primal forces of nature.

Pool's stunning new film is mystical and emotionally powerful. Filled with breath-taking imagery her film weaves a powerful spell that highlights life's fragility, while celebrating the ability of the individual to triumph in the face of overwhelming adversity.
